4 Different Marble Tiles Options to Consider For Flooring

When it comes to natural stone, marble is by far the most popular option. It is versatile stone that can be applied in virtually all dry spaces such as the living room, bedroom or even as kitchen countertops. But did you know there is more to marble than its many variations in color?

Marble tile is available in four different options. These are:

Polished

Marble is one of the few stones that is able to take on a high polish. This stone can be buffed until it begins to glisten under light. This type of finished marble is smooth to touch. If the marble is a light color, it actually glows. The room’s light penetrates its surface and then illuminates it from within, creating a soft shadow light.

Since polished marble is quite slippery, it should be not installed in wet areas such as the bathroom. In addition, polished surfaces show scratches and damage rather quickly, so ensure you install your polished marble in a low traffic area. Such blemishes are more visible in darker marble shades.

Honed

Honing is a process that takes a block of marble and files it down to smoothen and flatten it out. However it is not done to the point of polishing it. In fact, it retains some of the rough texture that is present in natural marble. This takes off any slipping hazards.

The only drawback of honed marble is that because it isn’t polished, the vibrant colors that are naturally present in marble will not shine through. Therefore it may appear washed out or faded in certain spots.

Tumbled

Tumbling is a process that is similar to how a rock tumbler works. Scratched or chipped tiles are placed into a large tumbling machine for some time. When the tiles are removed from the machine, they have rounded edges with a stripped surface.

As a result, each tumbled tile piece will have a slightly different appearance. Even the shape of each tile will vary slightly. When laying tumbled tiles in a floor, you have to ensure that the layout flows attractively. This gives the entire floor a natural and rustic look.

Mosaic

Marble can also be sought in mosaic cuts. These can be either small individual chips or mesh-mounted chips on a backing. If you’re planning to create an attractive display, consider mosaic patterns which are arranged on a mesh.
